BERBERIAN SOUND STUDIO For his second feature, the young British director Peter Strickland (Katalin Varga) has created an alternately cheerful and caustic valentine to the low-budget “giallo” horror films that populated Italian cinema throughout the 1960s, ‘70s and ‘80s. The year is 1976 and a mild-mannered British sound engineer named Gilderoy (the delightful Toby Jones) arrives in Rome to work on the post-synchronized soundtrack to The Equestrian Vortex, a tale of witchcraft and murder set inside an all-girl riding academy. Instead of showing us any scenes from this lurid movie-within-the-movie, however, Strickland keeps his focus squarely on the mayhem within the sound studio itself, as Gilderoy and his team plunge carving knives into fruits and vegetables, actresses try out various shrieks and screams in the recording booth, and a pompous director struts about comparing his schlock to high art. Then, gradually, the line between cinema and reality blurs, and Gilderoy can no longer tell if he is merely working on this movie or is perhaps its very subject. Decked out in fastidious period detail and a keen appreciation for the suggestive power of sound, Berberian Sound Studio is a creepy treat for cinephiles and horror fans alike. Winner: Best Film, Best Director (Peter Strickland) and Best Actor (Toby Jones) at FrightFest 2012!

Abbas Kiarostami at the New York Film Festival

yeah, so that moment when modern cinema’s most provocatively self-reflexive auteur stared down the lens of *my* camera… that was a trip.

Kiarostami dropped by NYFF this morning for a Q&A after the press screening of his new film Like Someone in Love, and i took a whole bunch of pictures of him sitting in a chair, talking into a microphone (or, more often than not, talking *not* into a microphone… but you can’t blame the guy for assuming that his voice carries). he spoke in Farsi (the woman to his right is a translator), but it was nevertheless easy to see that he is / appears to be a jovial, witty, and not especially self-serious guy.

newsy bits: it’s no secret that he plans on returning to italy for his next film, and he repeated as much this morning. on the other hand, i was delighted to learn that he has *several* scripts ready to go should Iran’s political climate allow him to resume working there, and he’s also very interested in making another film in Japan (this is good news, i promise).

p.s. yes, i’m displeased that my lens wasn’t long enough to get lots of *Close-Ups,* but it seems like i got to make a stupid joke about it anyway, so it’s all good.

p.p.s. no one has ever seen Abbas Kiarostami without his sunglasses and lived to blog about it.

wow. well this sure is pretty, although i confess that i’m not entirely confident as to why Sherman picked this particular image to represent a film festival. nevertheless, as someone for whom NYFF is like Christmas + Kiarostami, i want this. i want it bad. and it can be mine (and yours) for a pretty decent price over at the Film Society of Lincoln Center’s website.

A video I took of Ellen Greene singing Somewhere That’s Green from Little Shop of Horrors with Alan Menken on piano during the New York Film Festival’s presentation of the newly restored director’s cut of the musical.

Alan and Ellen surprised the audience by singing some of the songs from the film/show, with Alan singing Suddenly Seymour, Mean Green Mother From Outer Space, Dentist, and Little Shop of Horrors, then Ellen finished with this song, and cue the standing ovation.

No one quite like Ellen Greene. She’s so one of a kind and amazing. I admit I first knew of her in Pushing Daisies and Heroes, but then I saw the rest of her work and she is just so excellent. And also looking amazing for 61!
